Do you know someone who is hurting today? Someone who is facing incredible loss or tragedy? In the last month, I have had from many dear friends facing this themselves or know someone who is. The world doesn't let us forget for long that it's a messy, hard place where the horrific invades our reality without warning. Over the last seemingly unending days of bad news, none of us can escape the fact that people are hurting, they are sad, heartbroken, and feeling lost. . It’s in the hospital rooms and hallways, in tragedy and sorrow, where the true measure of a Christian is often found. If we truly want to model Christ's love for the hurting and broken people we know, we can do this by just being ourselves. Offer a hand to hold, a shoulder to cry on. Just be present and say, “I don’t know why this happened. This is awful and it is horrible. I’m so sorry this happened to your family.” The truth is, we don’t have any answers, and the only One that can give answers probably feels very far away right now. Give them freedom and space to rant and rail. Be close when they need someone to be there, but honor their desire for moments to be alone. Share David’s angry Psalms with them, where he calls out the injustice and awfulness of the world. They are included in the Bible for a reason. . There is a time to mourn, a time to be sad, a time to be angry. You know what? It's okay to not be okay. . This place in which we find ourselves is a weird, horrible shadow of what is real. It is not what were were created for. And the struggle each of us face is that our eternal selves, the deepest part of our souls, understands this and is longing for something more. . Give yourself permission to have moments where you aren't "thriving" in your "new normal." Don't feel pressure to act like things are great are or pretend that you aren't missing things that are dear to you. Give yourself freedom to grieve over what has been lost. Take time to reflect on what you wish was different and what you long for it to be again. Don't be afraid of those feelings because they are real. The tomb that held God Himself burst open in the quiet of a Sunday morning, proclaiming that the promise made on the day death entered the world had come true. . This is the story in all its terrible beauty. . He sees you and loves you in spite of everything you have ever said or thought or done. He created you to know Him and to laugh and live and love with Him. This is even more important to remember right now. After the most awful, discouraging, and heartbreaking day of their lives, Jesus’ followers sat in their homes and wondered, “What is next? Is this the end of our hopes and dreams?” . They had no idea what incredible things were being done in the silence of that day. We may not see God’s hand right now. We may not hear His voice like we wish we could. . But that doesn’t mean He isn’t at work on our behalf. The greatest thing God ever did was done in utter isolation, when no one could see or hear from Him. Take heart from that, my friends.
